Somerset County Plantation Housesto Open for Olde Princess Anne DaysPRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Sept. 24, 2004) -– Several 18th and early 19th century Somerset County plantation houses will be part of the 47th annual Olde Princess Anne Days house and garden tour on Saturday, Oct. 16, and Sunday, Oct. 17. Visitors to this year’s event will be able to tour Clifton and Hollyhurst, two early 19th century houses on the Manokin River, an 18th century farmhouse known as Harrington Plantation, Catalpa Farm which has one of four surviving tobacco barns in Somerset County, and the mid-19th century Capt. William T. Ford House on Maddox Island. This year’s walking tour in Princess Anne will include the Col. George Handy House, the Levin Woolford House, Covington, the C.H. Hayman House, the Littleton Long House, the Sarah Martin Done House, the Teackle Gatehouse and the Teackle Mansion. Several public buildings and churches will also be open, including the Somerset County Courthouse, which celebrates its centennial this year, the 18th century Washington Hotel, Fairmount Academy and the Old Somerset County Jail. An Early American Artisans Fair on the grounds of the Teackle Mansion will include the Philadelphia Handmade Paper Co., wooden toy maker Jim Wandell of Crisfield, handmade beeswax candles from the Pemberton Foundation and other vendors. The mansion will also be the setting for demonstrations in weaving, spinning and hearth cooking, plus period music, a livestock exhibit, and children’s activities. Advance tickets for the house and garden tour are $12 and can be purchased at all Peninsula Bank branches and at the Somerset County Tourism Office on Route 13 in Princess Anne. The hours for this year’s Olde Princess Anne Days are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Proceeds from the event will benefit the ongoing restoration and upkeep of Teackle Mansion, a Federal era, Neoclassical style house built between 1802 and 1819 by Littleton Dennis Teackle. It is currently operated as a historic house museum by the Somerset County Historical Society.
