Except for the bamboo grove that overlooks the Manokin River, the gardens are almost exactly the same as they were in 1938. Until then, the land was farmed right up to the house. The Carpenters brought in many magnolia trees and boxwood; some shipped on a boat from Richmond. The gardens were planted to look their best in the spring and the fall when the Carpenter family resided at Clifton. The pool was dug out using donkeys and was one of the first in Somerset County. One spring, Ms. Carpenter's garden book notes that they planted 1000 roses. A few of these rosebushes remain in the brick-walk garden by the pool. |
