The historic Revells Neck area of the Manokin River has been inhabited since 1651.
Randal Revell, one of Somerset County's first three commissioners, lived here on his property called "Double Purchase," but there is no trace of his house incorporated into Clifton.  It was in this vicinity that the early settlers outwitted forty armed riders-in-the-night from Virginia led by Edmund Scarburgh who were trying to annex this part of Maryland to Virginia.

Clifton is built on the site of the 20 acre town of Somersettown, a designated port of entry, which existed from 1669-1673.  The county courthouse was here.  The town moved to Princess Anne in 1733.  All of the maps in the dining room show Somersettown on them.
