1938-1979
The original owners and builder are unknown.  From 1938 until 1979, the owners were Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Carpenter of Wilmington, Delaware.  He was the first non-DuPont family member that became President of the DuPont Company.  Mrs. Carpenter believed she was a descendant of Randal Revell.

  1979-Present
Kathryn Washburn Niskanen purchased Clifton in 1979 from the Carpenter's granddaughter.  During the week, Kathy and her husband Bill live in Washington, DC where he is the Chairman of the Cato Institute and she is the Director of International Affairs for the U.S. Department of the Interior.
